Collection of Objects of the Berger Textile Industry

The Collection of Objects of the Berger Industry consists of clothing, textile items for home decoration, albums with textile samples, sketches of clothing, as well as fashion magazine “Wiener Mode” which contains pictures of dresses decorated with Berger Industry products. Salamon Berger, the first director of the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb, was a textile merchant. Before coming to the Museum, he worked on the creation of a collection of ethnographic objects and handicrafts, but also on encouraging a cottage industry mainly related to weaving. In 1885, he opened a textile store in Zagreb, along with a textile school where experienced village weavers passed on their knowledge to younger women. At its peak, Berger employed 1,600 women who made luxury clothing and other textile items. He also collaborated with famous fashion houses of the time, such as Paquin and Rejean. The placement of these products almost all over the world through large international economic exhibitions was of a great significance for the spread of our national culture. Thanks to Berger's efforts, local handicraft products were exhibited at 96 exhibitions in Europe, America and Australia.  All of them carried the label of Croatian peasanthouse-works as a type of brand. Many of the items exhibited at those exhibitions later entered the Ethnographic Museum's holdings via the S.  Berger Collection (Collection II).
